Video Game Design Degrees, Ranked on What Graduates Get

A game design degree teaches you how games work and how to build them: rules and systems, levels, prototypes and playtests, and the engines studios use. This site compares every program on graduation rates, cost and what the jobs pay.

The degree

What a Game Design Degree Teaches

The Department of Education's definition of a game design program describes one that "focuses on the design, development, and programming of interactive media entertainment, including computer and video games, virtual environments, Internet applications, and other interactive media." It lists instruction in "theory of games, turn-based games, real-time games, visual and interactive design, story development, animation, simulation, and programming."

That's a wide list, and schools cut it in different ways. Some game design programs sit inside an art school and lean on drawing, 3D modeling and animation. Others sit in a computer science department and expect you to write C++ by your second year. Most land in between. You'll learn how rules create choices, how a level teaches a player without a tutorial, and how to run a playtest and act on what you see.

The quickest way to tell which kind of program you're looking at is the course list for the first two years. If it's full of drawing studios, it's an art program. If it's full of calculus and data structures, it's a programming program with a design label. Neither is wrong. They lead to different jobs, which is why this site ranks game development degrees and animation schools separately from the best game design schools.

Four fields

Game Design, Game Programming, Simulation or Animation

Nearly every degree a future game maker would look at falls into one of four fields. Here's how many programs each one has.

Programs that reported graduates to IPEDS, by field, 50 states and DC. Graduate counts include master's and doctorates. Bar length is the field's total.

Game design is the core of this site, with 116 programs. Animation is the largest field, at 187, because it covers film, TV and visual effects programs as well as games. Simulation programs, 30 of them, build virtual environments and often teach the same engines games use. Computer game programming is the smallest, at 21, and the most technical: it's a computer science degree, not an arts degree.

Designers decide what a game does. Developers make it run. Artists make it look and move right. If you're not sure which side of that line you're on, game design vs. game development walks through the courses and the jobs on each side.

Location

Where the Game Design Schools Are

California has 78 programs across the four fields, 2.7 times as many as New York, the next state. Each tile is a state, shaded by its program count; select one to see its schools.

If you'd rather stay close to home, game design schools near me lists every state, and each state page compares that state's colleges on cost and graduation rate. The city guides go closer still: 50 cities, each ranking the game design programs in or near the metro and listing the metro's other game programs, with the distance to each campus and what game jobs pay there.

Pay

What Game Design Jobs Pay

BLS doesn't publish a game designer salary. Its wage survey counts occupations, not industries, so a game designer is counted with web and digital interface designers and a game developer with software developers. O*NET, the Labor Department's job database, files video game designers under that interface designer code. Here's what each occupation paid nationally in May 2025:

  • Web and digital interface designers

    Video game designer

    $104,000 median Lowest 10% $53,750Top 10% $201,550 +6% projected growth, 2025-35
  • Software developers

    Game developer

    $135,980 median Lowest 10% $82,460Top 10% $214,670 +10.2% projected growth, 2025-35
  • Software QA analysts and testers

    Game tester

    $104,300 median Lowest 10% $61,440Top 10% $167,010 +5.7% projected growth, 2025-35
  • Special effects artists and animators

    Animator

    $102,030 median Lowest 10% $58,600Top 10% $177,110 -0.3% projected growth, 2025-35
  • Producers and directors

    Game producer

    $90,360 median Lowest 10% $45,780Top 10% $198,540 +4% projected growth, 2025-35
  • Fine artists and illustrators

    Concept artist

    $55,490 median Lowest 10% $31,630Top 10% $144,210 -2.9% projected growth, 2025-35

National annual wages, BLS OEWS May 2025. Bars run from the lowest-paid 10% to the top 10% on one scale; the marker is the median. Growth is projected employment change, 2025-35; all occupations: 3.5%.

Read these as each occupation's pay, not as a studio's offer. The interface designer group includes web and user interface designers, so its $104,000 median describes the whole occupation, not game studios alone. The spread matters more than the median: the lowest-paid 10% of that group earn under $53,750, and the top 10% earn over $201,550.

The outlook differs a lot by job. BLS projects software developers to grow 10.2% between 2025 and 2035, against 3.5% for all jobs. For special effects artists and animators it projects a small decline, 0.3%. If you're choosing between the art track and the programming track, that difference is worth more weight than a few thousand dollars of median pay. The video game designer salary page breaks the designer figure down by state.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Game Design Degree?

A game design degree is a college program that teaches how games are designed and built: rules and systems, level design, prototyping and playtesting, story, and the engines studios use. Federal data lists 116 game design programs in the U.S.: 67 bachelor's, 43 associate and 6 master's. Counting game programming, simulation and animation too, the total is 354.

How Long Does a Game Design Degree Take?

A bachelor's degree in game design takes four years full time, an associate degree two, and a master's about two. The bachelor's is the standard credential for studio jobs, and there are 67 game design bachelor's programs in the U.S. The 43 game design associate programs can lead to testing work or a transfer, and the game design certificate guide compares them with shorter programs. Many graduate game programs are classed under other subjects, so the master's in game design ranking also lists well-known programs from outside game design.

How Much Do Video Game Designers Make?

BLS doesn't publish a game designer wage. O*NET files video game designers under web and digital interface designers, whose national median was $104,000 in May 2025, with the lowest-paid 10% under $53,750 and the top 10% above $201,550.

Is a Game Design Degree Worth It?

It can be, when the price is one you can carry and the program makes you ship games. Game design has no license or required certification, and studios hire on your portfolio and the games you've worked on, so a degree earns its cost through years of team projects, deadlines and critique. Price is the other half: median in-state tuition at public schools with a game design bachelor's is $7,715 a year, against $37,125 at private ones. Borrowing private-college money for a program that never makes you finish a game is a bad trade. The is game design a good career guide weighs the job counts and the risks.

Can You Get a Game Design Degree Online?

Yes. The online game design degree ranking lists bachelor's programs you can finish fully online, ranked on completion and cost. Some programs marketed as online still require campus visits or residencies, so confirm the format with admissions before you apply.

Do You Need a Degree to Be a Game Designer?

No. Game design has no license or required certification, and studios hire on your portfolio and the games you have shipped. A degree gives you years of team projects, deadlines and critique, which is the fastest way most people build that portfolio.

What Is the Difference Between Game Design and Game Development?

Game design decides what a game does: its rules, systems, levels and pacing. Game development makes it run: the programming, the engine work and the tools. The degrees split the same way, and the jobs pay differently.
